Energy
The mill operates a 38 MW cogeneration facility which uses biomass as its fuel source and has a total internal generation-capacity of 60 MW. Burning biomass has advantages over fossil fuels, as it is a renewable source of energy and is considered carbon-neutral (no net gain of carbon dioxide created by burning). The cogeneration facility produces energy (electricity and steam) for:
- The Edmundston pulping operations (electricity and steam);
- The Madawaska paper operations (electricity and steam); and
- NB Power (electricity sold to the grid).
The energy usage for Edmundston’s pulping operations is:
Fossil Fuel Consumption: 2.70 GJ/ADMT of pulp
Biomass Consumption: 38.78 GJ/ADMT of pulp
Biomass and liquor provide 83% of the energy needs for Edmundston’s pulping operations.
