Solid Residues
The Edmundston mill continues to pursue new beneficial uses for solid residues. For example, biosolids produced in biological treatment (or secondary treatment) are diverted from the landfill and sent for composting. The mill also has a longstanding soil augmentation program using fly ash, a waste by-product produced at the mill. Research has shown that ash helps to adjust the pH levels in soil and adds important nutrients, which are useful in the growth of crops. The mill, in conjunction with a local company, has initiated a program to use wood ash in a composting operation. In 2009, approximately 29,000 metric tons of solid residues were beneficially reused.
