Twin Rivers Paper EcoBarrier® PFAS-Free Packaging Papers Earn BPI® Compostability Certification

Madawaska, ME (October 28, 2021) –The Twin Rivers Paper Company, a leading producer of specialty paper products, has received compostability certification from the Biodegradable Products Institute® (BPI®) for its portfolio of EcoBarrier® PFAS-free packaging papers.

Products that receive BPI compostability certification have gone through rigorous third-party testing to ASTM standards that ensures items can be safely cycled back into the soil at a commercial composting facility. The BPI certification mark helps consumers identify and trust that an item is compostable.

“In addition to meeting our customers’ stringent grease-resistance performance requirements, we’re committed to helping customers meet their sustainability goals,” stated Rachel Van Wychen, Director of Sales – Specialty Packaging and Technical at Twin Rivers Paper. “With the achievement of BPI certification, our EcoBarrier products are 100% recyclable, biodegradable and compostable, making EcoBarrier papers the optimal substrate for sustainable packaging.”

EcoBarrier

A leader in the development of PFAS-free food packaging papers, Twin Rivers Paper was one of the first in the industry to commercialize a non-fluorinated oil and grease-resistant paper. The company has continued to leverage its barrier expertise and papermaking technology, expanding its FDA-compliant PFAS-free offering in April 2021 with the addition of EcoBarrier Plus paper engineered for heavy grease-resistant applications.

“Throughout the past decade, we’ve collaborated closely with converters and the largest fast-food, quick-serve and fast-casual restaurants to engineer and continuously optimize our portfolio of EcoBarrier PFAS-free packaging papers,” added Van Wychen. “Twin Rivers’ EcoBarrier papers are known in the industry for exceptional stain holdout, outstanding printability and hallmark converting performance, creating value for converters, food service providers and brand owners.”

Partnering with our customers transitioning to PFAS-free

As states pass laws banning PFAS in food packaging by the end of 2023 and North American chemical companies curtail production of fluorochemical-based oil and grease-resistant agents, Twin Rivers Paper has accelerated its work with customers to qualify EcoBarrier PFAS-free products.

“Twin Rivers has committed substantial resources to the development and expansion of our PFAS-free paper portfolio,” explained Van Wychen. “From product development to technical services and sales, the Twin team is dedicated to supporting our customers’ transition to PFAS-free packaging papers. That includes working closely with customers to qualify our EcoBarrier products and establish their supply well in advance of the transition.”
