Annual Shutdown at Twin Rivers Temporarily Impacts River Water Level

An important notice for residents and businesses along the Madawaska River

Edmundston, NB (September 4, 2013) – As part of Twin Rivers Paper Company’s annual shut-down and capital investment, we will be doing proactive maintenance on two sections of a pipeline that lies next to the Madawaska River.

“We are communicating with residents and businesses along the Madawaska River because the water level has to be lowered by approximately eight feet at Edmundston Marina to accommodate the maintenance work,” said Tim Lowe, Chief Executive Officer for Twin Rivers. ”During this time, residents are encouraged to remove floating docks and pleasure boats from the river.”

Gates on the Madawaska Hydrodam will be used to change the river level. The lower water levels may be detectable as far upriver as the Jardin de la République campground.

“Since the City of Edmundston, through our Energy Department, now owns and operates the Madawaska Hydrodam, we will be cooperating with Twin Rivers so that the company can get this important work done in the most efficient way possible,” says Marc Michaud, the City of Edmundston’s Chief Administrative Officer.

Operations to lower the level of the Madawaska River will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday, September 8 and finish just before midnight on Monday, September 9. The City will begin raising water levels back to normal on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 11 – once pipeline work is completed. Water levels on the river will be back to normal on Friday, September 13

Twin Rivers Paper Company would like to thank the residents of Edmundston and surrounding communities for their understanding as this important maintenance work is completed, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
